What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a Te Ara Huarau School Profile Report from January 2024. This kind of report sets out what ERO and the school will evaluate together, here how well teaching and the curriculum help students build the skills and attitudes behind the school’s values.
ERO pointed to consultative leadership that plans change carefully and supports ongoing improvement, curriculum structures that give room for real learning across the breadth of the New Zealand Curriculum, wide-ranging wellbeing and pastoral programmes, and teachers who use a mix of approaches to engage students, meet different learning needs and encourage critical thinking.
Next, the school plans to handle the continuing changes to the national curriculum and NCEA well, including more chances for students to learn te reo and mātauranga Māori and take part in tikanga Māori. It also aims to build its values more firmly into learning programmes, and to use student and parent feedback in its own evaluation of how well teaching helps every student show those values.

Enrolling
As a state-integrated school, it gives preference of enrolment to students whose parents have a particular sympathy with its Anglican special character or a particular connection with the school, and attendance dues apply.
Under its enrolment scheme, preference students accepted as Tolcarne boarders come first, then preference students living within Dunedin city, the school’s area of reasonable convenience, with sisters of current students and other connected families ahead of the rest and a ballot when a group has more applicants than places. A limited number of places can go to non-preference students, also by ballot.
Years 7 and 9 are the main intake levels, though girls can start at other year levels when places allow. Families apply online with referee reports and a recent school report, and the school publishes its application closing dates, timeline and schedule of fees on its enrolment page each year. International students apply through the school’s international page.
