European settlement of Dunedin began in 1848 with Scottish migrants, and Tainui developed as a residential extension of the city during the twentieth century alongside Musselburgh and Andersons Bay. Gardens and early transport links, including a former railway and ferry service, connected the area to central Dunedin by the late 1800s.
