What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the college is a School Evaluation Report from October 2025. ERO describes it as a state-integrated school with a Presbyterian special character, and found most students engaged, progressing well and doing very well.
Almost all students gained NCEA Level 1, most gained Level 2, a large majority Level 3 and a small majority University Entrance, with Māori students matching or bettering the school average, and almost all who sat the International Baccalaureate gained it.
ERO noted a strong sense of belonging, settled classrooms and well-planned transitions. It also found that a year of acting principals, before a permanent principal was appointed, had slowed progress on the college’s earlier priorities, and that only a small majority of students attend regularly, below the Government’s target, although attendance is improving.
ERO’s priorities for the college are to refocus its strategic direction on student-centred goals, build shared leadership and systems, develop a common understanding of internal evaluation, draw more on wellbeing and learning information and on what students say to shape teaching, and lift regular attendance to meet Government targets.

Enrolling
As a state-integrated school, John McGlashan College gives preference to families with a family, religious or philosophical connection to its special character, and attendance dues apply.
When there are more applicants than places, the college identifies preference applicants first and most then go into a ballot under a Ministry-approved enrolment scheme, so living in the home zone does not on its own secure a place.
Families apply with the college’s online application form, and boarding families must first visit for a talk and tour. The college publishes its application closing dates for day and boarding places on its enrolment pages, and international students enrol through the college’s international page.
