The name Mornington first appeared in records in 1862. The suburb operated as a separate borough until amalgamation with Dunedin in 1916. Its former post office on Mailer Street, completed in 1905, features a distinctive mock-Byzantine domed tower and remains a local landmark.
A cable tramway line serving Mornington began operation in 1883 as part of Dunedin’s early public transport network. The suburb was also the site of New Zealand’s first golf course, opened in 1872. Unity Park contains a statue of Antarctic explorer Admiral Richard Byrd, commemorating his 1928 expedition that departed from Dunedin.
