The low elevation creates productive farmland but also exposes the area to flooding, addressed by the Lower Taieri Flood Protection Scheme operated by the Otago Regional Council.
The suburb developed in the mid-19th century alongside European settlement of the plains. Early farmers established properties on the rich soils, and the community grew around agriculture, particularly sheep, beef and mixed farming.
