Waverley takes its name from Sir Walter Scott’s novel Waverley, the first in the popular Waverley Novels series.
Waverley takes its name from Sir Walter Scott’s novel Waverley, the first in the popular Waverley Novels series. The suburb stands on land originally owned by early Dunedin settler Reverend Thomas Burns, whose dairy farm Grant Braes was located here.
The original farmhouse still stands amid modern housing, and the northern end of Belford Street retains the slightly altered name Grants Braes.
The suburb occupies the flank of Shiel Hill and overlooks Andersons Bay and the upper reaches of Otago Harbour. Steep slopes are a defining feature, with roads such as Doon Street descending sharply toward the harbour and Vauxhall. Larnach Road provides the main connection to central Dunedin and links with Marne Street near Andersons Bay Inlet.
Waverley serves as a quiet residential neighbourhood with a mix of older character homes and newer properties. Grant’s Braes School, a state primary school opened in 1950, operates on Belford Street with a roll of 194 pupils as of March 2026.

The suburb developed as part of Dunedin’s expansion, with the earliest recorded residential housing dating from the 1880s. The nearby Vauxhall Gardens, a short-lived pleasure ground opened during the Otago gold rush in 1862, once occupied land to the southwest before closing in 1870.
