The suburb takes its name from Scottish settler James Macandrew, who lived at Colinswood in the area during his later life. Its Māori name, Te Roto Pāteke, refers to the brown teal (pāteke) that were once common in the waterway.
The settlement has a sheltered beach reserve with picnic facilities and parking, making it popular with families. The beach is short, shallow and protected, suitable for paddling and calm-water activities. A dairy, café and small gallery serve both residents and day visitors.
The Otago Harbour Cycleway (also known as Te Aka Ōtākou) runs alongside the road, providing a flat, paved route for cyclists and walkers that extends from the city to Portobello and beyond. The path was developed on the alignment of the historic road, parts of which were constructed with prison labour in the 1860s.
