Glenfalloch Gardens occupies a sheltered site on the Otago Peninsula that has been developed as a garden since the 1870s. The name comes from Gaelic for “hidden valley.” Mature English beech, oak, ash and other exotic trees stand alongside native ferns, kōwhai, rimu and pōhutukawa, creating layered woodland and open lawn areas.
The Otago Peninsula Trust, New Zealand’s first private charitable conservation trust (registered 1967), assumed management in 1969. The Trust maintains the gardens as a public asset while supporting native planting, restoration and environmental education across the peninsula.
Paths follow the course of a small stream and pass historic dry-stone walls. Panoramic views of Otago Harbour appear at several points, especially from higher lawns. The gardens change with the seasons, from spring rhododendrons, azaleas and flowering cherries to autumn maples and fuchsias that benefit from the mild microclimate.
