About Ocean Grove

Ocean Grove lies at the point where the Otago Peninsula joins the mainland.

Ocean Grove lies at the point where the Otago Peninsula joins the mainland. Lawyers Head bluff and Andersons Bay Cemetery isolate it from much of the city, giving the suburb a distinct semi-rural feel despite its proximity to urban Dunedin. The landscape includes steep slopes rising from the coast, scrub-covered dunes and the prominent Tomahawk Bluff of black volcanic rock.

Tomahawk Lagoon, a shallow coastal lake of about 30 hectares, lies immediately north of the residential area. Its inner lobe is managed as a wildlife reserve by the Department of Conservation. The lagoon supports diverse birdlife and is separated from the sea by Tomahawk Beach at low tide.

The suburb was known as Tomahawk until the 1930s. It became part of Dunedin City in 1968. Main access is via Tomahawk Road, which connects westward to Andersons Bay and Tainui and continues eastward as the rural Centre Road toward the peninsula ridge.

Tomahawk Beach and Coastline

Tomahawk Beach is a south-facing white sand beach approximately 1 km long.

Tomahawk Beach is a south-facing white sand beach approximately 1 km long. It lies between St Kilda Beach to the west and Smaills Beach to the east, separated by Tomahawk Bluff.

The beach is popular with surfers, especially at the eastern end, dog walkers and casual visitors. Strong swells and rip currents are common, particularly near the headlands and the lagoon outlet channel.

At very low tides Tomahawk and Smaills Beaches join into a longer stretch of sand. Coastal dunes are subject to wind erosion, and Dunedin City Council works with the Tomahawk Smaills Beachcare Trust on revegetation and contouring programmes. Sand is periodically extracted from the lagoon outlet under permit to reduce flooding risk.

Wildlife and Conservation

The area supports notable wildlife.

The area supports notable wildlife. New Zealand sea lions frequently visit the beach and lagoon outlet, while yellow-eyed penguins and little blue penguins are occasional visitors. Visitors must keep a safe distance from all marine mammals and birds. Red-billed gulls and black-backed gulls are commonly seen.

Tomahawk Lagoon is recognised for its birdlife, with the inner lobe designated a wildlife reserve. Conservation efforts focus on dune stabilisation, native vegetation protection and maintaining the ecological balance of the lagoon and coastal zones. The threatened plant Isolepis basilaris occurs in the reserve.

The name Tomahawk is an anglicised form of the Māori words toma haka, interpreted as a place of bones or dance by a gravesite, though no pre-European burial sites are known in the immediate area. Prior to European settlement the beaches formed part of a Māori walking track between Ōtākou and the lagoon.

Remains of two World War II gun emplacements stand near the Jack Fox Lookout on Tomahawk Bluff. The Ocean Grove Recreation Reserve was formally established in 1931, building on earlier reserve classifications from 1897.
