Middle Beach Dunedin: Swimming, Water Quality and Ocean Beach Walks

Last updated October 2026

Middle Beach, also known as Moana Rua, is the central stretch of Dunedin’s long Ocean Beach, lying between St Clair and St Kilda about 3 kilometres south of the Dunedin city centre. It is backed by high sand dunes rather than an esplanade, but it shares the same sand and the same surf as its neighbours.

Enterprise Dunedin calls the St Clair and St Kilda beach the go-to swimming beach for Dunedin locals, with surf patrols at both ends in summer. Otago Regional Council tests the water at Middle Beach every week over summer, and the site holds an Excellent long-term grade on LAWA.

What the grades mean

Excellent and Good: rarely unsafe for swimming. Fair: usually fine, but avoid swimming after rain. Poor: often unsuitable, especially after rain, so check the latest result first.

Grades use LAWA’s method: the 95th percentile of routine enterococci results over the five summers from 2020/21 to 2024/25, with at least 50 tests (20 per 100 mL from 144 tests).

About Middle Beach

Ocean Beach runs along the southern edge of Dunedin from St Clair in the west to Lawyers Head in the east. It is divided into three roughly equal lengths: St Clair Beach at the western end, Middle Beach in the centre and St Kilda Beach to the east.

Enterprise Dunedin notes that it is little known that Middle Beach, or Moana Rua, sits between its two better-known neighbours.

Unlike St Clair, where houses and the esplanade sit right behind the sea wall, Middle Beach is backed by a line of high dunes. A walkway runs along the top of them, linking the St Clair Esplanade with the Sir James Barnes Lookout, which looks out over South Dunedin.

Behind the dunes are several of the city’s sports grounds, including Kettle Park, and the miniature Ocean Beach Railway runs through these parks from the Otago Model Engineering Club’s base near the St Kilda beach access.

The dunes are an important line of defence for the low-lying suburbs behind them, and in recent years they have suffered severe erosion. Dunedin City Council has carried out work to reinforce them.

Erosion has threatened this coast before: heavy seas in the 1890s and early 1900s took land near St Clair, and the first sea wall, on the line of today’s esplanade, was built between 1911 and 1913. Groynes once lined the beach to hold the sand, and the last of their posts survived until a major storm in the 2010s.

People come to Middle Beach to walk the sand between St Clair and St Kilda, and to swim or surf between them. Enterprise Dunedin describes the beach as having New Zealand’s most consistent surf break.

Swimming and Water Quality at Middle Beach

Otago Regional Council samples the water at Middle Beach every week from November to March, and the results appear on LAWA’s “Can I Swim Here?” page for the site.

Middle Beach has an Excellent LAWA long-term grade, based on routine summer testing over the summers of 2020/21 to 2024/25, and almost every sample over that time has met the guideline for swimming.

An Excellent grade means the water has rarely been found unsuitable for swimming, but it is a long-term record, not a guarantee for any given day. Check the latest result on LAWA before you swim, and stay out of the water for at least 48 hours after heavy rain, when runoff and wastewater overflows can affect Dunedin’s beaches.

The surf is the main hazard. Ocean Beach faces straight into the Pacific swell, and St Clair Surf Life Saving Club has warned that shifting sand can dig deep troughs close to the shore, so that you can go from knee-deep water to out of your depth in a single step.

Rips form along the beach too. Middle Beach itself is not patrolled, so for a supervised swim in summer, head to the patrolled areas at St Clair or St Kilda and swim between the flags. If the surf looks big or you are unsure of the conditions, stay out.

Getting There and Facilities

Middle Beach is reached from the St Clair or St Kilda ends of Ocean Beach, or along the dune-top walkway between the St Clair Esplanade and the Sir James Barnes Lookout. There is parking near the beach accesses, and the facilities at St Clair and St Kilda are a short walk along the sand.

A walk the full length of Ocean Beach, from the St Clair Esplanade to St Kilda and back, is an easy way to see Middle Beach and both of its neighbours.
