Balaclava, Dunedin: Suburb Guide to Hill Streets and City Links

Last updated October 2026

Balaclava is a small residential suburb on the hills southwest of central Dunedin, gathered around the southern end of Elgin Road and the short streets that branch off it. The hill it sits on was once part of the rim of the long-extinct Dunedin volcano, whose crater is now Otago Harbour.

The name in use today comes from the Crimean War battle of the same name. Houses, connecting streets and Balaclava School on Mercer Street make up most of what is here. Barr Street leads down toward Kaikorai Valley, Mornington Road runs toward Lookout Point, and Orbus route 63 ties the hill to the central city bus hub and Logan Park.

About Balaclava

Balaclava is one of Dunedin’s smaller hill suburbs, a pocket of housing rather than a town centre. It lies close to the southern end of Elgin Road, with homes on the streets that run off that road.

The setting is typical of the city’s western hills: sloping sections, short blocks, and a quick change in height between the ridge and the valley below.

The ground is old volcanic country. Published descriptions of this part of the city place the Balaclava hillside on the rim of the Dunedin volcano, the long-extinct crater that now holds Otago Harbour. There is no beach, major reserve or civic building recorded here. The suburb reads as streets and houses, with the primary school as the main public place.

The name is a settler import. Otago place-name research records Balaclava as named for the Crimean War battle. No separate Māori name for this suburb turned up in the sources used for this guide. The European name is the one on maps, bus timetables and the school gate.

Balaclava School stands at 2 Mercer Street. It is a state co-educational primary school for years 1 to 6, and it opened in 1964. The school says its grounds and playgrounds give it the feel of a country school in the city. For many families, the school is the reason the suburb’s name is familiar.

For a visitor, Balaclava is a place to stay in or pass through, not a sightseeing stop on its own. The interest is the hill setting, the short run into town, and a Crimean War name on a quiet set of Dunedin streets.

Shops, secondary schools and larger parks are elsewhere in the city. Everyday life sits on the local streets and at the primary school.

Getting Around

Elgin Road is the main way into the southern end of the suburb, with local streets branching from it. Barr Street is the link down toward Kaikorai Valley. Mornington Road is the link toward Lookout Point, the saddle above Caversham Valley on the long-used southern route out of the central city.

Public transport is Orbus route 63, Balaclava to the city and Logan Park. The hill end of the route is on Mornington Road. Weekday buses run from early morning into the evening, with a less frequent timetable on weekends.

The central Dunedin Bus Hub on Great King Street is the transfer point for other city routes. Times change, so check the Otago Regional Council timetable before you travel.

How Balaclava Got Its Name

Balaclava is named for the Crimean War battle. That origin is recorded in James Herries Beattie’s Otago Place Names, the work cited for the suburb in standard references. A precise date for the first use of the name on this hillside is not set out in the sources used here.

The suburb’s clearest dated institution is the school. Balaclava School opened in 1964 as a contributing primary, and it remains the local school for years 1 to 6. That opening marks state school building on the hill. It is not a founding date for the streets themselves.

Out and About

Balaclava is not a park, beach or walking-track destination. Time outside is mostly on residential streets and at the school. For a known viewpoint close by, follow Mornington Road toward Lookout Point. Kaikorai Valley, reached by Barr Street, is the long valley below the ridge, followed by Kaikorai Valley Road.
