About Waikouaiti Library
Waikouaiti Library was founded in 1862 by Rev A Fenton and Miss Emily Orbell. It began with a collection of 100 books, half donated by Fenton, and was initially housed in a school room on Beach Street. The library later moved to Mechanics’ Hall in 1875 and continued to serve the community independently until local government amalgamation in 1989 integrated it into the Dunedin Public Libraries network.
The current building opened on 29 February 1996. As the northernmost library in the network, it provides all standard services in a smaller, easy-to-access facility. Members benefit from interlibrary loans and shared collections across the six branches.
